AAC Ally: Treatment

This course will take you through the foundational knowledge and strategies you need to start implementing AAC successfully.

Have you run into a wall and feel like progress has stalled?

You might feel overwhelmed with the number of possible therapy targets and just don’t know where to start.

Or maybe you’re feeling like goal writing for AAC is a daunting hurdle you’re not sure how to overcome.

SPOILER ALERT: You don’t have to be an “AAC expert” to get kids motivated and making progress in your sessions.

Grad school doesn't always prepare us to work with AAC, so we're left to figure it out piecemeal as we go.

When I started out in this field I felt lost, so I dove head first into the research, made lots of mistakes, and learned first hand what makes AAC therapy successful.

And now, I'm passing all of my clinical knowledge onto you!

Hi, I'm Rachel...

I've been in private practice in Los Angeles since 2014 where I specialize in supporting children and families in language learning through AAC. You might also know me as the co-host of the "Talking with Tech Podcast" which has nearly 300 episodes and over one million downloads. Each week, I interview AAC users, thought leaders, and researchers to share the latest evidence-based practice in AAC. I’ve presented both nationally and abroad to teach over 28,000 clinicians and educators like you how to simplify the AAC process while creating a lasting impact for the students you serve.

It was incredibly insightful, equipping me with practical skills to effectively use when providing therapy. Rachel's instruction and hands-on approach made concepts easy to grasp, truly enhancing my ability to support individuals with communication challenges.

Awesome!!!

Tanya Romanini M.A.,CCC-SLP

The insights and skills I gained during this training have been invaluable. This training has truly opened my eyes to the importance of training a child's team to effectively implement AAC across all environments in the child's daily life. I now feel more equipped to guide the team in key areas such as modeling, prompting, and ensuring the consistent daily use of the AAC system. Rachel's expertise and passion for AAC were evident throughout the training, and her practical approaches have inspired me to foster a more cohesive communication strategy within the team. I am excited to put these strategies into practice and see the positive impact on the child's communication skills. Thank you, Rachel, for your dedication and for providing such a comprehensive and engaging training experience!

With limited experience in AAC, I’m leaving this course feeling confident and well-prepared. It covered everything I needed and more, equipping me with new tools to support my AAC clients and offering different approaches I can apply across my entire caseload. 1000/10 recommend!

Rachel has done it again! I highly recommend AAC Ally: Treatment for clinicians who are new to AAC implementation or want to be sure they are covering all their bases. This course covers everything from core words, to prompting, goal writing, and coaching. 5 million stars!

Great resource for the... What's next.... Questions

Elisa Wern OTR/L, ATP

This treatment edition of Rachel Madel's AAC Ally course is an excellent resource for anyone who's ever asked well. What's next for my AAC user... or their family.... or their team? It gives solid implementation and intervention ideas while keeping a focus on the communicator and what we know is research-based best practice. The ability to pause and go do an intervention idea or activity and then come back is a great, Hands-On way to engage in the learning process and maximize your communicator's success! Highly recommend for clinicians in any field but particularly my SLP colleagues!

Amazing Course

Rachel Madel is always such an encouraging and motivating speaker and SLP. She has a wealth of knowledge in AAC assessment and treatment with so many useful resources. I loved the assessment course and this one was even more powerful! I love how she makes AAC so approachable and continues to fuel my love for AAC users. I am so excited to incorporate practical coaching and treatment strategies into my practice. :)

More Than I Learned In Grad School!!!

Stephanie Akie

Rachel Madel's AAC Ally course was phenomenal—honestly, it offered more practical, progressive, and up-to-date information than my AAC grad school course! As a school-based SLP, I found the content invaluable for supporting students who use AAC. The course goes beyond theory, focusing on functional strategies that can be immediately applied to help students communicate more effectively in real-world and school based settings. AAC can be overwhelming and intimidating (yes, even to an SLP...) and I feel more confident and empowered than ever! And the free resources that are incredible, are an added bonus. I would absolutely recommend this course, 10/10 to any SLP, especially those working in schools or with AAC users. You wont regret it!

Remarkable

Betsy Quilling

I have struggled for years trying to figure out where do I start. When I think of language there is so much and so many parts that is included with this topic. So when I thought about AAC weather that was PECS or something else it felt very over whelming to me. Taking this course and other course have helped me get some guidance, and focus about how and where to begin. So Thank you so much! I know this course will make a stronger person in this area of speech and language pathology.

I know you have questions…

  • How can I get the team to buy-in to AAC?

  • What do I do when students don’t respond to modeling?

  • How do I write powerful goals to ensure AAC progress?

  • How do I provide support without my students becoming prompt-dependent?

  • What do I do if my student is pressing buttons repeatedly?

  • How can AAC be used to support Gestalt Language Processing?

  • What games and activities are good to use for AAC students?

  • How can I successfully coach caregivers and paraprofessionals?

But here’s the thing…

If you give a therapist a solution, they’ll help one student for one day. If you teach a therapist clinical decision-making skills, they’ll empower countless students throughout their career.

That’s why I created this course.

AAC from goal writing to goal achievement and everything in between

BONUS:  I included a 30-minute bonus module of therapy activity ideas - so you can save time on finding activities and focus on what you do best: working with students.

You’ll also learn how to create goals that are tailored to each individual student and have built in protections to assure the team is using AAC and helping your students make progress.

Confused about gestalt language processing and AAC? There is an entire module dedicated to what I’ve found to be successful, what to avoid, and what autistic adults who use AAC have to say.

Rather than lots of theory, this course is taught primarily through case studies; highlighting video footage of how I set up and execute AAC therapy with my clients AND how I coach parents and team members to feel inspired and empowered when it comes to AAC.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What’s the difference between this course and Rachel’s other AAC Ally course?

The original AAC Ally course that launched in 2021 is focused primarily on AAC assessment and can help you learn considerations for finding the right AAC system, beginning implementation with families and classroom staff, and how to seamlessly collaborate with the team and get buy in. In AAC Ally: Treatment, the focus is on implementation once your student already has an AAC system. You’ll get more insight on teaching methods, best practices, strategies, therapy ideas, selecting vocabulary, goal writing guidance, and so much more!

  • Who is this course for?

Any clinician or educator who’s interested in upleveling their AAC knowledge to the most current evidence-based practices. You’ll learn how to effectively model language using AAC, understand least-to-most-prompting, write more effective goals for AAC and how to teach all of these skills to communication partners through AAC coaching. CFYs all the way to AAC veterans can gain valuable insights to streamline their AAC processes, promote more collaboration and learn how to troubleshoot and problem-solve when things don’t seem to be working.

  • Who is this course NOT for?

People who only want dense theory with no practical application. This is a practical framework to get your students inspired and making progress. This course was not initially intended for parents, however, it could give valuable ideas on best practices for AAC and how to create a more connected multidisciplinary team for your child.

  • Will I receive ASHA CEUs for this?

After course completion you will receive a certificate for 5.0 PDH (professional development hours). This course does not provide ASHA CEU’s. If you want to understand the difference between PDH and CEUs you can click the link below: https://www.theaccentchannel.com/blog/are-cmhs-the-same-as-asha-ceus

  • Is this really worth $129?

It's true that you can find a lot of great AAC content online for free. What you won’t find online is a one-stop resource for equipping professionals with the coaching and clinical decision-making skills they need to truly feel confident in this area of AAC. You won’t just get answers… you’ll get the questions and framework needed to get you thinking like an AAC specialist. And information is only valuable if it's well organized, you’re invested in it and you’re ready to start applying it into your practice! This course takes everything I know from interviewing hundreds of AAC thought leaders (including AAC users themselves!) and working in AAC private practice for over a decade—and distills it into an easy-to-navigate AAC roadmap. So you save hours of time and headache by having everything all in one place at your fingertips. PLUS, the bonus resources alone are sold for $50 on my website. I used to hate paying for courses, until I realized that the good ones are an investment in becoming the best possible clinician I can be. How much that's worth is up to you :)

As a CF with a large caseload of AAC users this course was invaluable. It provided insights into the "why" behind AAC, incorporating neuro-divergent affirming practices and perspectives from both clinicians and adult users. The inclusion of real-life treatment videos enriched my understanding and made the concepts feel applicable. I particularly appreciated the opportunities to make my own clinical judgments and reflect on them with guidance from Rachel. This course has equipped me with essential tools for my current AAC caseload and has given me a solid starting point for immediate application. I also appreciated the additional resources provided, which will support my ongoing learning and practice. Overall, this course is a must for anyone looking to enhance their skills in AAC treatment.
